Biogas and Biofuel Equipment Installation - Illinois and Wisconsin

farming harvest wasteAmerican Industrial Werks can assist with moving and installation of equipment needed for your biogas plant.  We are experienced in moving and installing all kinds of heavy equipment as well as providing metal fabrication needed for setup and ongoing operations.  Green energy equipment, be it a Dystor® Digester Gas Holder System, biogas purifiers, generators, biogas bags or boilers, is a rapidly growing area that requires experienced moving and installation crews to get the job done right.

Biogas refers to a gas made from anaerobic digestion of agricultural and animal waste, food waste and sometimes also municipal solid waste, as well as biofuel crops.  Equipment to produce this gas varies based on the type of organic waste to be used as raw material and heat needed for digestion.  Dependent on the waste material and operating temperature, a batch digester will start producing biogas after two to four weeks; production will slowly increase then drop off after about four months.  In cold climates the efficiency of a digester will decrease, thus heating is needed to maintain continuous gas production.  Of the gases produced from a biogas plant, methane is captured and used to power generators such as the GE Jenbacher Type 2. Other uses for the methane are heat for climate control and boilers, as well as fuel for vehicles converted to biogas.industrial food waste

Sources of Biomass:

  • Agricultural Biomass - Manure from dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, and waste from crops.
  • Municipal Treatment Plants Biosolids - Waste Water
  • Alcohol/Ethanol Biomass - Leftover material from producing alcohol and ethanol is another source of biomass.
  • Industrial Food Biomass - Waste from food manufacturers is an excellent source of biomass.

In Illinois and Wisconsin, farms and food & beverage manufacturing stand out as prime candidates for biogas plant installations.

Food & Beverage

Using an anaerobic digester, food wastes are broken down by microorganisms in an oxygen free environment to produce biogas. The biogas flow from the digester contains methane which gets separated from other gases and can then be used to run a generator and generate electricity for:

  • Food production & plant operations
  • Nearby facilities
  • Sale back to the utility

Heat recovered from generating electricity is often used for:

  • Producing hot water
  • Climate control - heating and cooling  (use industrial curtains for improved results)
  • Refrigeration for food
  • Steam for pasteurization

Farms

Using an anaerobic digester, farm wastes from cattle, hogs, chickens, as well as waste from crops are broken down to produce biogas and fertilizer. The biogas flow from the digester can then be used to as a “free” fuel to generate electricity for:

  • Farm building and equipment operations
  • Nearby facilities
  • Sale back to the utility

Heat recovered from generating electricity is often used for:

  • Producing hot water
  • Climate control - heating and cooling
  • Refrigeration
  • Steam for pasteurization

Additionally methane gas produced from the digester can be used as fuel in farm vehicles/trucks converted to run on methane

Case Study

In March of 2011, the Energy Center of Wisconsin released a document entitled “Great Lakes Region Food Industry Biogas Casebook”. This document highlights some existing facilities in the region utilizing anaerobic digestion.

Biogas can be used in many energy generation applications including: electric and thermal power production through a combined heat and power unit (CHP), heat generation through boiler technology, natural gas substitution and fossil fuel replacement for vehicle and fleet operation.

12 facilities are profiled in the 55 page document to share their experiences so far, and explore how other facilities may proceed to incorporate AD with their operations.
